Title: Hood star
Post by: curator on March 20, 2006, 06:44:32 PM
Has anyone ever given any thought to a way of making a "removeable" hood star for our 170/220 type radiator cap base types?    There are so many types....  I just wonder if it is possible or even feasible.   It would be handy to be able to remove when parking the car or having one that swivels and is not totally stationary, or.....??????   Just wondering.

There is a radiator cap without the star.  You could swap the radiator cap w/ star when leaving the car unattended, or just remove the cap.  The problem with the removable star is that our cars have a functional cap....not ornamental like all of the later models.

Here is a radiator cap without the star.  I have bought from this vendor before with good results.  As further information, the gas cap and radiator cap are the same size and interchangeable, just tried it on my 170Vb.

My 1951 220 has a flexible star that  unscrews from the radiator shell. I also have a cap without the star like John pictured.

Here is a new 170/220 radiator cap with what appears to be a "flexible" star.

Charles,  What keeps the radiator sealed with the flexible star?  Is the spring tension high enough to keep a positive seal under pressure?

The real cap is located under the hood on the 220.   That vendor in you post also shows a vented cap which would apply for the 170.

the 220 has a separate filler spout

Title: 1940-50 170/220 Mercedes Benz Radiator Star With Base

1940-50 170/220 Mercedes Benz Radiator Star With Base

IThis is a new old stock Mercedes Benz hood star with radiator cap base that screws on to the radiator/grille. The star and base are too small to be from a 300 series Mercedes so I believe that it fits 1949-1955 era model 170 or 220 cars. I can ship internationally by United States Postal System at the buyers expense.

this one must be for another model (220?), as the 2nd image shows the base just has the typical modern hook for the spring to the star, whereas the 170Sb, DS type models,  actually seal with pressure release and are used as the actual radiator cap.

So on a 220 the bonnet star is not a part of the radiator cap?

Correct, The actual radiator cap is inside.  I'll see if I have a photo handy.

No photo, as many times as I've pulled it out, I guess I never took a picture of it.
