Transmission fluid check

 (J Axman)>>>According to the 170 Workshop manual, section G.
The tranny gets 1.3 (.0236 imp gal) oil; you screw off a lateral plug in the tranny case (appears to be on the passenger side). Looks like it takes a hex head. I would try to get at it underneath the car, versus pulling the tranny cover. If you just bought the car, since there doesn't appear to be a dip stick for measuring, and if you suspect the fluid is low, possibly do to a leak under the tranny, you'll have to drain it and start over....probably wouldn't hurt anyway. There is central lube line that goes to the clutch.

(E Thomas)>>you might as well change the oil, I have been using 85-140W gear oil in mine. Do the rear axle while you are down there grubbing about. The filler is a 14mm hex plug (same as the drain on the bottom) on the right side of the gear box, toward the front. This can be hard to see from under the car. Ah yes, the new/old car ritual purging...

(C Adamson)>>The 220 manual calls for Type A automatic transmission fluid which I use both in the 220 and 190Db. Here is a picture of the 190Db tranny with the cover off. I just changed the clutch two months ago and looked inside the transmission.

(J Ellis)>>On the 170, the filling hole on the right side of the transmission also acts as the level indicator. Fluid level is up to the bottom of the hole. Access to the fill plug is by removing an access panel on the transmission hump. I have been using ATF Dexron III for the gear box.
