Gearbox parts
(Cyrus)>>> I am looking for parts for the Gearbox of my car. The previous owner has played around with the gears and so they do not mesh very well and make an awful sound when running. The car is a 1936 Roadster. I have attached a picture in the profile. As I am located in India, getting a whole gearbox down would be impractical. However if someone has a similar gearbox and can open it and send me all the parts seperately it would be great. Any other suggestions, tips would be welcome.
(C Lamn)>>> I believe your request for the individual parts to be shortsighted. I would pay the incremental shipping cost of the case and save the labor cost of the tear-down. Your transmission has apparently been apart and put back together by a poor mechanic. Your personal disassembly of the complete box will give you a lot of guidance in the proper assembly of the best parts of both. I imported an 170 engine block from rural Europe to the US. If Fed-Ex is in India I would recommend them highly. They arranged trucks on both ends of my engine delivery and managed it in four days time! All of the arrangements were by internet including the customs forms. I can also advise as to money transfers. You will likely be dealing with an individual without credit card capabilities. The international bank wire transfer worked perfectly for me. The currency exchange is automatic. All the best, and I hope to find a box within the parts group that I mentioned. Chuck
(J Axman)>>Welcome Cyrus....good to hear from you. I had no idea you had a 170......
I think I would agree with Chuck, for the cost and labor, I would try to find a parts car with a compliant tranny or better still, keep your eyes peeled on ebay other sites for something showing up. Our group generally posts everything that hits the www regarding our models of interest. Volker generally posts everything hitting from Euro Ebay.....I'm noticing more parts available in Euro than the US, for obvious reasons, since there are more of these cars in the homeland. Hopefully something will show up in the near future.....meanwhile, we'll keep our eyes open. Cyrus, do you have an image of your 170 you can send so I can post to an owner page..... good to hear from you.
(H Magno)>> One problem you may run into on the gearbox is that the pre-war clutch plate I believe has a different spline (and the clutch is smaller, I think). A post-war gearbox should fit but you would have to update the clutch and flywheel. The advantage of this conversion is a fully synchronized box and readily available clutch parts (190, late 220 S style). Unfortunately, I don't have a gearbox to spare at the moment. If you try to find a pre-war box, you are limiting your options considerably. If you find one at all, it may not be in very good condition.
