Title: Keys for 220
Post by: fj76 on October 12, 2008, 12:59:59 PM

I have a set of keys blanks that i bought from Tom Hanson at Classic Centre. I gave him the key code according to my build card following which he mailed the blanks with a cutting code number. I cannot find a locksmith who is willing to undertake the job. Not much help, as it is a blank an dnobody knows how to figure eout the key cutting code

I am mssing keys for the driver door, fuel filler cap and replacement NOs boot handle. Can anyone recommend someone preferably in the Boston area. The Nos handle lock can be taken off easily, as can the fuel filler lock.

There is quite a good article on the Ponton group website on key codes and cutting.

http://www.mbzponton.org/valueadded/other/keys.htm (http://www.mbzponton.org/valueadded/other/keys.htm)

I ordered new Neiman key blanks and had them cut by a guy in Texas who works mainly with VW keys and locks, but was able to cut the keys with my key code.  Very reasonable and quick, however, I am not familiar with the key blank types for the 220.

Mine happened to be an "R" type key blank, but in later cars like the Ponton, the first number was the key blank number
i.e. 82365 would be an 8 type key blank with a cutting code of 2365.

The key to the driver door is easy to cut yourself. I have done it several times with 170-keys. The 220 keys I have seen have been the same type.
From the inside you loose one nut and then you can slowly put the handle into two pieces. Beware of all the small parts.
Then you can cut a new key with a file. No problem.

If anyone wants, I can later on upload some pictures.

I will upload when I have sparetime during this week.
If you are lucky perhaps I have a spare key for you. I have some old ones in my drawer.
If you dismount the Booth handle you can see the keynumber at the handle shaft.
Send me this number by E-mail and I will check my keys.

Some pictures showing handle and key.
You can see 2 types of handles. The one for 170Sb I think is the same as 220.
Be very careful when pulling the shaft out of the handle. A small spring may fly away from the middle position of the shaft.braveman170

And some more pictures.
Since I could not lose the nut from the 170Sb shaft some pictures shows the 170S instead.

The keey-blank you then cut with a file. The small brass-parts must be inline with the shaft. Do not cut the blank to deep. Then you have to buy a new blank and start from the beginning.

Perhaps you can ask a locksmith to help you.

Good Luck !

Hello,

Sorry fj76 but I had no key with your number. Is D207 the number to both the door and the booth ?
I know a man who perhaps can help. Tomorrow I will try to catch him.
Is your fuel filler lock the same as mine ?  braveman170

I'd like to find an aftermarket ignition key blank for the type "W" key. Any reference to a common US supplier like Taylor etc. would be appreciated. It's for a 170 S. Maybe we should compile a list of substitute blanks for all the varieties of keys, since the ones from the Classic Center are very expensive. $ 60+ list.

I am thinking that with an aftermarket blank, one could make sure that the key works before hacking into the expensive blank.

Henry, I'm not familiar with the term "Type W".
Can someone explain that to me? Or a picture? (John)

Try this one:
Side 1: SILCA ITALY
Side 2: GHE1  174

I have bought this blank from my local locksmith.
About 8USD cost.

I have originalkeys:
9499W
1994W

and some R-, P- and M-keys

My car happens to be an "R" blank.  I have attached a copy of the key code for the Neiman style keys that were also used on very early 50's VW's.

I bought several keys from the following two sources, but I don't know if they have "W" blanks.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=138116
http://www.kaeferschluessel.de/sess/utn;jsessionid=15479e8338bf4f9/shopdata/index.shopscript

The German vendor cut my keys from the original key code, and they work like new in the steering lock.

By the way, the original Neiman key blanks are no longer manufactured and are only available from existing stocks.

For your information, the keys that MB Classic Center have, are not original key blanks nor even close copies of the original Neiman.  I did find some keys from other sources that have the same key way but not the distinctive head of the key.  I believe that they were Taylor, but I will check to see if I can find my prior research.

The keys that I purchsed from both sources were identical to the left most Neiman key in Lars' pictures, except of course for the key way.

Looking into the key profiles it appears that the following keys have the same keyways as the Nieman type "W"

ILCO #H61VM or #BM6/BM2
Dominion #H61VM or #61N
Taylor #67W
Silca #NE14

As Per the MBZ Price Book Blue pages Ca 1959 page 23:
( I tried to scan the page but am having trouble with the blue background)

Ignition Lock

" Pre war Models Profile     Taylor No
                          R            62A
170V, S                W           62VM
220, 300b,S,d        M           65K

Door Lock

Pre War Models      C           R63H
170V                    Y           62VA
