It's a pre-war ZF transmission non-synchro on 1st and 2nd, later replaced sometime in 1938 with MB's own fully synchronized box which until after the war, also had the one piece case with integral bell housing.

It's easy to distinguish the W 153 from the W 143. The W 153 has an X-frame like the 170 V.

The gearboxes are easy to tell apart, as they usually have a ZF or Maybach plate on them. The Maybach transmission has a bell housing integral with the transmission case and the case is aluminum or other light metal.
