Title: Renewing rear diff pinion seal fr a 170Da
Post by: Frank Smith on June 29, 2008, 02:05:40 AM
I have a 170Da wich I use aprox three days a week and have noticed oil leaking from the diff pinion seal. Can this be renewed while the diff is still in the car?

Would be gratefull of help if anyone has had experience in this area.

Yes you can do it but you should have the pin wrench for the nut. It has six pins. These usually aren't easy to find. Most of the wrenches from the special tools suppliers have four pins.  I've been having the wrenches machined from ordinary sockets as I have needed them. Maybe some other owner in Australia has one. You also need some kind of bar to hold the three-arm flange while you loosen the nut. Try to do it on a lift.
