Title: Reproduction chassis/VIN plates (and others)
Post by: CraigS on May 16, 2008, 01:27:22 AM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am reproducing the chassis (VIN) plates for Mercedes from the 1930's to the late 1970's. These are made in Germany and very well made. The plates are cauterised, not laser or silk screen printed as some other cheaper ones are, and can be supplied blank or with your details. Some examples of 170 & 220 plates are below. I am also reproducing the various other plates, such as the body plates, Karosserie and paint tags, engine number, Bosch horn plates, and, shortly, the Bosch ignition distributor tags. I am also open to reproducing any other plates - all you need do is ask. All I need is a photo and the size. I can be contacted at reproplates@gmail.com

Interesting service you have on offer Craig,

One could imagine someone who has just repainted their car and looking to do the finishing touches, these would be just the thing to replace the old, rusty originals.

Craig, These are great ID tags!.  However, from the pictures, you need to include the screws also.  All of the mounted ID plate pictures are using the incorrect screws (for pre-Ponton cars).  Certainly no phillips (cross head) screws were utilized, and the pan head sheet metal screws are not correct either.

The correct screw is an A3 x 6 DIN 7512 round head slotted sheet metal screw which is no longer available.  If you could find some comparable screws, this would be of service to those that are trying to keep original.

The screws are something I have been considering for some time. As you say, DIN 7512 is NLA, and has been replaced by a steel tape measure with that number. The Ponton and after screw is apparently N000.000.000.817, but I have not seen what this looks like. I will be in Germany in a couple of weeks, and intend going to a dealer to see if they have it and what it looks like.

If you have time, as as I don't have a picture or diagram of DIN 7512, could you have a look through this catalog, and see if you can identify something close ? I use this company quite a lot. I believe the closest to the originals would be either ISO 1481 (DIN 7971) or ISO 7049 (DIN 7981).

The closest number is a DIN 7974, but I don't know if this is in existence any more?  By the way Craig, what do your Bosch distributor tags look like?  Do you have the rivets for the tags?  I will post a picture of the DIN 7512 screw tomorrow.

Keep doing what you are doing....a great service!

I am waiting on the distributor tag to be sent to me, along with the pins that hold it to the distributor. Hopefully I will receive this before going to Germany so that I can check with Reyher and/or others. Once set up, it will be relatively easy to change the numbers for the myriad of model numbers.

I am also checking with the Classic Center about the screws/rivets for the engine tags, which I believe are called Hammer Drive Screws.

DIN 7974 is also discontinued, and DIN 7971 is the closest match to that. A lot of these were discontinued in the mid 1980's - I guess because of lack of demand. DIN 91 is another one that was deleted.

Just in case anyone needs to know - The rivets that hold the engine tag are called, in MB literature, "round head notched pin (engine plate to cylinder crankcase)"
and are part number 001476 003002.  According to my source "They are available from Mercedes and are not expensive" - whatever that means.
