Title: Wanted: Seat Belts and Sunvisor
Post by: fj76 on April 29, 2008, 01:34:07 PM
My recently acquired  54' 220 CAB A does not have the factory optional seatbelts on it? Where can i buy these from? Also, another strange thing about this car is that there is no passenger side sunvisor! Nor are their any brackets hole where it should have been. Could someone suggets a vendor for both these items?  Thanks,  FJ

I don't know why, but I seem to recall seeing somewhere that the drivers sunvisor was standard and the passenger one optional. This is sort of borne out by the fact that a sunvisor (Sonnenblende - DM22,50) is listed in the options for '50's models. I have never heard of factory supplied seatbelts. I suspect that most were dealer and/or aftermarket installed in the early '60's when they became more common.

Makes sense.(sunvisor). The car was orignally restored by Don Lafavre(member) and inspected by Jim Axman when the seller initially bought it three or four years ago.It is also the only known cab A with window vends. I have seen a factory option seatbelt on a 1955 Mercedes 220A Cab owned by a guy in Gardena,CA (The buckle i think also had the mercedes insignia on it). I checked out a couple of websites and the a basic belt can be bought of rabout $25/=(they don't look great but i have no choice). I have to figure out something for the rear as i need to put a child seat in there too.

I'm surprised that the car has only one visor. I think two were standard on the cabriolets.

Craig was right. Don Lafaver has just told me that the passenger sun visor was an option which was not ordered by the first owner of my CAB A. It is really strange that he ordered window vents as a custom option and no passenger sun visor.

I'm sorry but I still disagree.  The parts book shows both visors for the Cab A and Cab B, and one visor for the sedan. From this I would have to assume that the second visor was optional only on the sedan. A second visor was often an option on some models. It's possible that the car was specially ordered without the visor for some reason. Has the wood been re-veneered at some point or is it original?

I have the orignal  order card of this car that  mentions  all it specs (production June 29,1954) and in options clearly states  "Ohnen Sonnenblade"(without sunvisor). The car was specially ordered without it.

Well, that clears that up. To answer your original question, as to where you can find one, is it a cloth covered type similar to the hed lining in the hood, or the transparent type ?

The 220 and 170 cabs should all have a transparent type sunvisor. On the 220 it is framed solid in chrome on the 170s just the top and sides not the bottom edge.
If you come up to Boston let me know and we can get together.

Sine we're comparing notes and observations on this topic:
The visors that are currently on my 220 Cab B, look to be of a material similar to "Bakelite".  A dark brown, papery almost plastic composition.  They are framed on only three sides.
looks just like the ones in my parts book.  In fact, the description reads "Sonnenblende (Celluloid)".

Just got back to the UK. The sunvisor has chrome brackets with a plastic flap. If all go as planned, i  hope to be in Boston end of the month. Would definitely like to meet up.

Volker, you are a little off on the sunvisors. The 220 were the same as the 170 until some time during the production of the curved windshield Cab A when they started using the ones with the full chrome surround.

I think the old visors that look opaque were once transparent.
