Title: Was Right Hand Drive ever available??
Post by: Scott Montoney on June 14, 2007, 08:34:06 AM
Can someone help this new owner? I have a history question. Were there ever any "Right Hand Drive" versions of the '52 220 Cab B made? I've never seen one or any reference to one for that matter. I've had several folks ask why my gauges are all Metric but left hand drive. I had never thought about it before. I'm trying to track down some historical documentation but what I've read so far makes no mention of it.
As usual, THANKS!

I can answer the metric portion of the question. It is metric because the car was not manufactured for the U.S destination. I could be wrong but all of the cars I own which were made for export to the U.S. are not metric, those made for countries which utilize the metric system are.

True, I assume that Germany is/was left hand drive like USA?

You are correct, Germany was always left hand drive. They did make right hand drive cars for export, so I would imagine that there are some rare 220 cab B right hand drive cars somewhere in the world.

Although we have none RHD posted in the sightings, we have several 170 type models from Australia. Also probably have some from the UK, and other british type colonies.

Does anyone know what countries the early post war cars were exported? If so, what countries received cars which had metric gauges verses those that didn't.

Do not know for sure, but I would imagine that gages utilizing english units were employed for export to Great Britain and it's colonies as well as the U.S. The rest of the world is metric, as we should be.

Both my 1953 170DA and my 1935 200 saloons are RHD and have imperial gauges. The instruments for the 200 are still out of the car.

Likewise, all the RHD versions in Australia have imperial gauges, as Australia did not change to metric until 1966.
