Spare Parts Box

INGREDIENTS
Although there are no known Worshop manuals, Books, publications, brochures, or  documents, that mention the existence of a spare parts box [kit] as an original option, it is believed that this item was available through special dealership order. It is widely believed that it was an item originally sold in Europe, but several have shown up in the US on ebay, etc..

These boxes contained spare parts for a major tune up, emergency repairs, with items such as a fuel pump diagram, spark plugs, extra bolts, head gasket, light bulbs, head pipe gaskets, etc [see ingredients list] and the box itself was generally stored on the back shelf [out of the way of the fitted luggage, in the trunck right behind the rear seat back [unless one had an a/c option]. Reports today indicate that this box [with so few in existence] fully stock,  can command prices upwards of 00 (as of Feb 2007).  However, the original box was made poorly from a woodcraftsman perspective and made of pine, making it vulnerable to wear and deterioration.

Title: Spare parts box

I may have posted this before, but with the new tech articles software I have installed on both the 3-0-0 and 170220 club sites, I am transfering stuff, adding new stuff.....it will be a drawn-out project but has a pleasing (to me) interface over what I was using.

I have not seen any in 170-220 type cars...but I suspect it was an option available through the dealership.
They were designed for long trips.....I used to have a reproduction box, but it went with the sale of my 300d  almost 2 years ago.   Nice tidy idea...have no idea how much they were in the 50s ; stored in the trunk.
There was one recently for sale on Ebay for $1200, which made the subject surface again.

I remember seeing a similar spare parts box on ebay last year, that was for the 170D models!  It was fairly complete and sold for several hundred dollars---I kick myself for not placing a higher bid--I stopped at $200.00!  Probably never see another one again!

I bought a 300 one almost 4 years ago for $100.  The problem is, it was from Hawaii and had termite damage, not so noticeable in the images.    The only salvageable piece of wood was the top.   It was pine (like the originals)

I ended up buying a reproduction box  from Brooklyn Motoren Werke (who had 4 of them reproduced in exotic woods) for $250.

Here's an image of it. Made much more substantial than the original.   I was going to stencil the top in white lettering, but couldn't bare to disturb  the grain appearance.  The box ended going with my 300d when I sold it 2 years ago.

I looked at the pictures on the 300 site.   I see there are several "?" dimensions.

I would like to make a box, if I can.  But, I do not want to guess too much.

Anybody have more detailed dimensions or pictures?

For example:

How does the bottom attach?

How are the blocks of wood attached that hold the little parts?

MORE PICTURES????

Thanks,
Walt...

I had an original "pine" spare parts box once that I bought years ago on Ebay.  it came from Hawaii and when it arrived, it was rotted with termite damage.   I gave the insert to someone and the lid.  The lid, as I recall was flatly pinned to the frame, whereas a more preferred way would be to insert it flush in the frame that is dovetailed.

The insert was drilled for the bulb holders, etc...on one end and then glued to a flat sheet that sat flush inside as a unit.

here are some more images.   Also a diagram...one does not fully load but has the actual dimension to some extent....also a pdf of the same diagram which is complete.   The diagram was done by an Architect in Washington DC (friend of mine from the 300 club).

PDF files do not show as thumbnail images....click on the last image entry "WalterKlatt_toolboxDiagram.pdf " for a diagram of the original.
