Can you tell me all the locations of the VIN#on a 170sd ?

The number should be stamped on the frame just behind the front spring tower. Also, it should also be stamped on the driver side cowl just outside the battery/storage area. Hop this helps.

The number is also printed on ID tags that are riveted to the right (passenger) side chassis adjacent to the stamped number that Don identified and on the right upper side of the firewall/cowl. All these numbers should match and are identified as the chassis numbers (Fahrgestell).
The number stamped in the sheet metal on the cowl left side is the build number (Aufbau) which is different from the chassis number. Note that on the 170V models, this number is hidden behind the fuse boxes.
There is also an engine number which is located on a ID tag riveted on the upper right side of the timing chain housing.
I suppose each state differs as far as what number is acutally used for the VIN#. My VIN# in California utilizes the chassis number for ID purposes.

On the 170Vb I bought out of Virgina, they used the Build number or the title. I was told by an elderly mb garage guy, that using the build number for cars coming to the US for registration was quite common.
