What does the D mean?

Post by: John Ellis on February 10, 2006, 09:14:32 PM
The EBay title description entitiles as a nationality identification.  I would assume that the "D" is for Deutschland.  Don't know where it would be placed on the car.  The description also says it is new and made of brass - ready for chroming.

On our models the D is usually in a white oval with black edge that is mounted next to the license plate. The D that is for sale I have only seen on a few of the larger prewar cars like 500 or 320. I though it would be of interest anyway...See pics.   Other countrys have other letters like:
GB england, F france, DK danmark, N norway, S sweden, PL poland, NL Holland, B belgium, E Spain, YU Yugoslavia, GR greece...

Title: Scott's new license plates
Post by: Volker on January 13, 2008, 05:16:17 AM
Scott had asked me to get him some german style plates when I went to Hamburg. It was very easy. They made them as I was waiting. This shop still had the original style letters. If anybody else wants some for their cars, let me know I am going back again in March and they are easy to stick in a suitcase. All kind of possible text comes to mind;
MB - 170 V, MB - 170 D, MB - 170 DS, etc
The D signs were still available at another plate shop as well.
Scott, I will send yours out on monday...

The "D" decals are also available from most large hardware stores in Germany, such as Praktika.

Volker. Do you know Reyher in Hamburg ? This is where I buy all my screws from - in bulk. The original screws are all but impossible to find in Australia, as most have changed to the star type heads, and to get a DIN screw in chrome also is impossible. Some of the original screws were deleted from the DIN registry in the 1980's, but they do have most of the DIN screws that are still available - but not always in chrome - sometimes they are stainless now.

Dear NCS, this is not a decal but the original type stamped aluminum plate. I am not familiar with Reyher, but if you give me an address I will go there in March and check them out.

Where was the "D" plate located and how was it fastened?

Reyher looks like they are a distributor to hardware suppliers.  Do they sell directly and in small quantities?  A  very good reference for DIN and ISO numbers for fasteners in the download section.

The D sign was required on all cars for travel out of the country. Nowerdays it is incorporated in the new licenseplates with a blue  background. On the 170S and 220 there is a pace for it next to the rear license plate to the right. Hence the extra lens on the license plate light. I am not sure about the 170V mounting. Not sure if the sign was required prewar as well.  This OTP owner mounted it to his bumper bracket with a twisted flat pice of metal. I recall seeing this done to a lot of VW bugs that way.

It was that "extra" lens to the right that started my quest for the sign a few months back.  As I examine my (the cars)rear bumper, it appears that when it was reassembled after being chromed a few years ago, that the main part of the bumper was put on upside down because the two mounting holes for the "D" are on the left side right now.  That is one of my growing list of projects to deal with over the winter months.  Yes, some of us have to deal with Snow and SALT for a few months each year but that is when I don't mind scheduling the more involved and lengthy projects so as not to interfear with prime drive time.
