I have a small leak in my boots in the rear axle shaft.   
I've found a vendor who specializes in CV joints and can get just about anything a decent price....but I need a Part # or reference.

According to the Niemoller catalog, the 170V and S were the same boot.  If I'm mistaken let me know.....
Does anyone have a part # for the Split boot with fixings?

MB number 136 351 02 91 for the split boot or Niemoeller #C 35 118. 

You will also need bolt set which is Niemoeller #C 35 121 but they are cad plated and I substituted them for stainless steel from the hardware store.  The nut and bolt sizes are as follows:

5 each bolts - M4 x 20 (DIN 931 hex head screw)
5 each nuts - M4 (DIN 934 hex head)
5 each washers - 4.3 (DIN 125)


The quantities are for each boot.

Hose clamps are #C 35 119 (large end) and #C 35 120 (small end).  Again you can obtain these from a local hardware store.  I ended up using the stainless banding material with the original Beru clamps.  Jim, you may remember when you first started the club, you helped with a source for the banding material.

Finally you will need some sealant for the joint.  I used Permatex "Blue" to seal the longitudinal seam.

The split boots are also available from MB Classic Center, Star Classics, and Paul's Autohaus.

Here's additional information I once got from Ron Van7ter (California, ponton guru) years ago.....which may also help:

The best position for the axle is about level. If you have a friendly shop or gas station that will let you use a rack (with ramps!) then great. If not, back the car onto portable ramps and crawl! (Or, if you don't feel comfortable doing this, jack up one side at a time, placing the floor jack under the trailing arms, and sliding the ramps under the tires.) I suggest not using the floor jack or jack stands at all in the job of changing the boot. Drain most of the gear oil. Remove the old boot. Prepare the new boot: rough up the mating surfaces of the splice so that the glue will adhere. use a file. Position the boot so that the bulky part of the bellows is on top. (I think this puts the split facing the rear, right?) Try to keep the mating surfaces free of dirt and oil. Glue the mating surfaces, just at each end near where the clamps are. I use Permatex brand blue RTV in the big tube. Install the clamps. I think I've positioned the tightening clamps on top, away from the splice so that the mating surfaces will not crawl and bind while tightening.
Glue the rest of the mating surfaces, and install the screws.

On the 170/220 models there is only the bolt-type for the split axle boot.   The staple type is used on the pontons and is more of a hastle to install.  Of course there is always the non-split boot, but that involves alot more work!

If you have an auto lift available, that would be the best.  However, I did mine on 12" ramps in a couple of hours.  Spent about an hour of that time trying to figure out how the Beru clamps worked .... the ease of worm gear clamps would be better but of course not original.

I use Loctite Black Max 380 Instant Adhesive. It's in the "super glue" family but  is  somewhat flexible. Not to be confused with Permatex Ultra Black RTV Silicone, especially since Permatex owns Loctite or vice versa, and their product lines seem to be intermingled. It's available in the industrial supplies world but the auto parts people may not know what it is unless they can get the full line of Loctite products.

The boot supplied by Mercedes has four bolts and they seem to work best on the 170S and 220. I have run into the five bolt boots over the years but never figured out what cars they are really for. On some of the axle tubes, if the boot is too long it is clamping in a spot that isn't smooth enough or large enough to seal correctly. Does anyone know the answer to this? Maybe we nead a survey.

I just looked at my boots and they are a 4 bolt pattern.  Looking at the picture in the MB parts book for the 170Vb and 170Db, they show a 5 bolt pattern.  When I ordered the boots I did not have the book, so I just asked a boot for my car.

The 170Vb/Db, 170Sb, 170D, 170S-V have a hypoid differential.  Would this have an effect on the length?
