This is quite an interesting auxiliary heater.  It's actually a Bosch auxiliary that someone would have ordered and probably could go in many cars of the era.   
 Too big to put under the seat, as the flatter one that was in my 300d. 
 
At first I thought it was just a deflector type [based on the prinicple of our hot water heat, where hot water goes through aluminum (?) fins and radiates heat into the space]  with a valve in the back for opening the water circulation connections to the engine, but now I see the wiring and I think J Elllis probably gave us the diagrams sometime back showing the switch, etc...

Here's the question......although the diagrams don't show the presence of an internal fan....there appears to be one inside. 

Could someone deciphor the text on this diagram page, so I can add it to the tech article on this aux heater?   Thanks

This is similar to the heater on my car. Yes the fan is on the inside and it does a really great job.  Stephen

My 1951 220 has a similar heater under the dash on the right hand side.
