Volker,  You made exclamation about the spare tire holder. Is that because it is a seldom item? My 220 has a holder like the one pictured. Charles Adamson

That's it. It was an option and you don't see it that often. I would love to see some more detailed pictrues of your car some day as well.

I used to work in a foundery supplying parts to Stuttgart and at the time I was trying to get hold of drawings for the spare whellholder.  I was told by my contact at the factory that the spare wheel holder was not a original Mercedes design, but that of a equipment manufacturer, hence the drawings were unavailable.  I got hold of a set to loan and copied the patterns and made 10 sets of these units.  Unfortunately the pattern got lost in a bankrupsy in a small foundery where it was residing at the time.

Just happened to notice the spare tire setup.....with a case around the tire?  Does this setup go back to pre-war days?

There are several 170S and SD models in our sightings with the hinged rear tire mount but none with the cover; another option?

The information in the tech post that the spare tire rack was not a "factory" item is not entirely correct despite what the people from MB might say about the drawings. It may well have been made by an outside supplier, but it appears in factory sales literature as an option.[/size] I am looking at several 170 DS brochures showing the spare tire rack and a full set of luggage for the trunk with no shelf installed.

Title: '52 220 Cab B Trunk Questions
Post by: Scott Montoney on September 18, 2007, 09:19:30 PM
I have a few questions about my trunk.  I'm hopeful that you folks that have far more experience than I, can offer some insight.
According to the folks at MB USA Classic Center, this car came with the following options:
   "Options
   -     Heating and 1 blower
   -     Special paint
   -     Spare-wheel carrier
   -     Lock no. y 3
   -     Trunk set, 4-piece"
"please see attached vehicle data card."
I've seen pictures where there is a shelf in the trunk.  Is it wood?  How thick? Plywood? How is it mounted? What color?
What kind of lining should be in the trunk area? How far does it extend?
You may notice there is no exterior handle!  There is a flex cable that connects to the latch and it goes to a handle mounted behind the back seat on the deck near the rear radio speaker.  It's obvious that the current arm on the latch is home made.  I can not see any evidence that there was ever a hole through the lid for a handle.  Has anyone ever seen or heard of this kind of latch?  Any Idea where I could go to research this question??
Once again I thank you for your assistance and insight.
